GIRONA BIKEPACKING vol 1: the first experience

Girona, Fortià, Palafrugell y Girona

August 2023. 446kms – 2773+.

There are few times that we throw bison skins on our shoulders and become nomads. The pacifier simply goes out day after day, with the sole objective of getting to the next point to spend the night. It's an interesting exercise, both physically and mentally, because not every day is the best day of your life; sometimes you don't sleep well, you feel tired, it's too hot or too cold, you wonder why you didn't go by car, but in the end, there's nothing else to pedal and you end up really enjoying it. It even has a spiritual roll that is very cool. Overall, this is our first bikepacking experience: de Gravel por Girona.

Day 0

Travel Donostia-Girona. We arrived early in the afternoon, prepared the bikes and went for a ride. The city smells of cycling, even too much, but we are excited and we put ourselves in the paper of death: pantalones cortos + largos calcetines ¿qué queeres? We are on vacation!

Day 1

We plan the longest stage for the first day, from Girona to Fortià, with 120km and 1,300mts. positive slope We had breakfast at Frodeno and left at 9:00. It was a spectacular day, we crossed forests, villages and wonderful rivers, climbed a curious asphalt port in a lunar environment, stopped to eat under a tree and arrived in Fortià a little before 4:00 p.m. A little sunstroke complicates things for us but the only shop in town supplies us with Doritos and jelly beans. Fixed issue.

Day 2

We wake up and it's going on, we have breakfast and it's going on, we're getting ready and it's going on. We decided to wait, given that the stage is 80km and quite flat, leaving a very hard last stretch. Arrived at 11:00 and decided to go out to the rain, menos mal que cogimos los chubasqueros...

The landscape changes, we approach the coast, we see the sea and we eat under a balcony of Sa Riera de Begur, just before starting the climb to the town. Hard ascent and descent in the rain, but the bike-friendly hotel in Palafrugell is worth it.

Day 3

We left at 9:00 passing through Calella de Palafrugell and happily faced another sunny day. We don't know that the toughest stage of all is ahead of us. 70km of climbs and descents that are difficult to ride, long stretches of walking, loss of track... to finish the route by going up to the Santuario de la Mare de Deus dels Angels, see the whole panorama and enjoy the last long descent to Girona.

Blessed is the me from the past who decided to book the hotel with pool.
